As I have said earlier, literally, you can use five tools to accomplish this task.

Now the question is, what do those tools have to do with transparent background making?

These tools will allow you to select any object or shape. Simple, right?

Well, there is a but, not every tool is meant to do the same thing. For example, Adobe includes the theme to serve different designing tasks.

Here, you will learn about these tools and when you should use them?

1. Quick Selection Tool

When you want an object from an image, Photoshop automatically identifies and automatically selects the object’s endpoint. So you don’t have to trace them manually.

2. Background Eraser Tools

The truth is that the background eraser tool has nothing to do with erasing a photo background because Photoshop has no way of finding out which one is or isn’t the background.

Instead, it can erase any part of the image. However, they are not suggested to make images transparent because it is a color eraser. Meaning it will use a sample color and erase only those colors.

So, unless you have a single color background, it is not recommended. For instance, you can use this to make the logo transparent.

3. Lesso Tools

There are two types – polygonal lasso and magnetic lasso tools. However, due to the characteristics, you can only use the magnetic lasso tool.

However, I will not cover this method here as they cannot provide you with pro results.

4. Pen Tool

The pen tool works just like an actual pen. You can use it to mark the outline of any complex or compound shape.

This process is widely known as a clipping path. By nature, it has similarities with the illustrator pen tool as they both create vector shapes. This is also known as teasing.

However, it is not suitable to mark hair, glass, or fury objects like an actual pen.

5. Brush Tools

Photoshop Masking is an advanced photo editing technique that is performed by using the brush tool.

Among all other methods, you may find this process of making the background transparent difficult.

However, it is an efficient way to remove transparent or semi-transparent objects like window glass background and change sky color into the water.

Here I will explain the procedure of removing the background from an image of a product. This type of image works adequately with this technique because of its clean edge structure.

You can find photos like this on pixabay.com or you can take your own photo. Here is an article on Light Tent for Small Product Photography.

The subject is separated from the background so it is easier to work with this method. The technical work will be more flawless on this image than others.

2. Upload Image in Photoshop & Organize Tools

To start the process, open photoshop and load the image file. To avoid any image you may duplicate the image. Now, you need to find the pen tool option in the tools palette located on the left side in photoshop.

3. Get Started With the Pen Tool

Get Started With the Pen Tool to isolate the object

There are ‘anchor points’ present in the pen tool that ties together different sections of lines into a ‘path’. We will use this to make a path on the edge of the object to successfully remove the background. Every time you click on your image a new anchor point will be created.

  • Create a path around your object using anchor points. Use keyboard shortcuts such as ‘command + Z’ on macs and ‘control + Z’ on PCs to undo or go backward.
  • Now, when it comes to curves you have to hold down your mouse and drag it away from the anchor point.
  • Next, you will see two handles appearing known as bezier handles.
  • You can utilize these handles to control the curve lines.
  • It also allows you to adjust each handle singly by holding down the Option or Alt key.

4. Make Adjustments

You can make any adjustments to your anchor points without having to undo your image completely.

  • Now, you need to zom in to 400% or any. You goal should be zoomed it that much, that allows you to see the path clearly.
  • Next, take your time to chek each and every edge of the object you have selected.
  • Hold down the Command or Alt key while dragging an anchor point.
  • This will switch your tool to the Direct Selection Tool.
  • You can also do this manually using the tool palette but it is less time-consuming to use the command key.

5. Remove the Background

Remove the background of the object

You are almost there! Now you just have to delete the background.

  • First, you have to save the current selection path.
  • Switch back to the pen tool by clicking the ‘P’ key.
  • Then click the button ‘Selection’ by searching the paths palette.
  • Click ‘OK’ and your object will be selected.

Now if you hit ‘delete’ your product will be removed and the background will remain.

At the top, you can see the program menu where you can click the select menu and then the inverse option. This will select a background. Now hit ‘Command/Control + Z’ and the background will be removed giving your object a clear, white background.

Just in case if you want a transparent background, go into the select menu and click ‘Re-select’. Invert your selection again, hit ‘Command/Control + Z’ to cut your object out. Click on the file menu and create another separate new document.

Now select ‘Transparent’ as the background setting then hit ‘OK’ to create your file. Lastly use ‘Command/Control + V’ to paste your object in place. You are done! You can edit your image as you like.

Creating Transparent Background in Photoshop of Hair Using the Image Masking Technique

Cutting out hair or fur in photoshop can be naturally a bit difficult. Although it also depends on the texture, for instance, curly hair is comparatively more difficult to cut out than straight hair. This technique is widely known as image masking.

The following steps below will guide you to achieve a clean cut out of an image that contains hair.

Step 1: Create the Selection With Quick Select Tool

Step 3: Refining the Image After Selection

Refining the Image After Selection- Pro Tips

This is when you will need to use masking for refining the image.

  • Choose Select and Mask from the toolbar at the top, this will take you into the Select/Mask toolbar where you can do necessary edits.
  • Increase the level of transparency to make your background invisible.
  • Now you can change the background view to black and white or whichever works for you the best.
  • Grab the refined brush tool from the toolbar.
  • Now paint over the rough edges or curls, try to get all the ends of the hair but keep away from the image so that photoshop can distinguish between hair and background.
  • As you refine the selection gets better and sharper.
  • Here is a tip: Turn on Decontaminate Colors. You will see the color fringing disappear giving it a smooth look. The output will change to New layer with a layer mask. Click ok.

You are done! It is not as hard as it seems in reality. Now you have a beautiful cutout of hair. You will notice a layer mask on the layer that you can use to refine even more if you need the cutout to look smoother.
